Tesla will buy cobalt from Glencore for use in two new car plants in a deepening of ties between Elon Musk’s electric car maker and the Swiss mining group. Glencore will supply Tesla’s new Shanghai Gigafactory and its planned Berlin facility with the metal used in lithium-ion batteries, according to people familiar with the matter.

New EU regulations, which are set to come into effect in 2021, impose significantly stricter compliance obligations on all companies in the minerals supply chain. All companies, from miners to electronic goods manufacturers, will be required to (i) demonstrate that they have the correct due diligence practices in place; (ii) identify other actors in their supply chains; and (iii) verify that these other actors have also implemented the correct procedures.

COBALT: Glencore acquires land rights from DRC state partner

Glencore’s subsidiary in the Democratic Republic of Congo has acquired land for a new tailings storage facility from state miner and partner Gécamines. Katanga, which is almost 100 per cent owned by Glencore following a recent debt-for-equity swap, will pay up to $250m under the deal for the rights to the land. The agreement will help to mitigate the risks resulting from land constraints and “enhance its ability to more efficiently operate the mines,” Katanga said in a press release.
