AUTO SALES: Passenger car registrations: -0.7% 10 months into 2019; +8.7% in October

In October 2019, the EU passenger car market grew by 8.7% to reach 1,177,746 units registered. This marked the highest October total on record since 2009. During the same month last year, registrations fell by 7.3% after the WLTP test came into effect, setting a low base of comparison for 2019. As a result, nearly all EU countries posted increases in October, with the exception of Cyprus and the United Kingdom.

EMISSIONS: California prohibits state purchase of ICE sedans, effective now; to stop buying from GM, Toyota, FCA and others over emissions fight

On Friday, the California Department of General Services (DGS) that, effective immediately, it is prohibiting purchasing by state agencies of any sedans solely powered by an internal combustion engine, with exemptions for certain public safety vehicles.

A new report from the MIT Energy Initiative warns that EVs may never reach the same sticker price so long as they rely on lithium-ion batteries, the energy storage technology that powers most of today’s consumer electronics. DIESEL: Western European Diesel Car Market October 2019

September’s diesel share of new car sales in the region is confirmed at 29.0%. Data for October, with three small markets estimated, suggest a figure of 31.3% leading to a YTD achievement of 32.1%, very close to that seen in September. Three markets returned a diesel share slightly higher than a year earlier (Austria, Germany and Norway) while a total of eight experienced a rise in diesel sales volume from a YoY standpoint.
