Johannesburg, 20 December 2019: The Minerals Council South Africa has called for urgent intervention by the Ministers of Police and Mineral Resources and Energy to prevent and investigate the violent assaults by heavily armed intruders on mining company targets, especially smelt houses. In the past year alone, the gold industry alone has suffered nine significant attacks that have seen employees and security personnel held hostage and assaulted.

COBALT: Glencore acquires land rights from DRC state partner

Glencore’s subsidiary in the Democratic Republic of Congo has acquired land for a new tailings storage facility from state miner and partner Gécamines. Katanga, which is almost 100 per cent owned by Glencore following a recent debt-for-equity swap, will pay up to $250m under the deal for the rights to the land. The agreement will help to mitigate the risks resulting from land constraints and “enhance its ability to more efficiently operate the mines,” Katanga said in a press release.

HYDROGEN: Denmark bets on green hydrogen

The Danish government has agreed to provide $19 million in funds for two large-scale hydrogen projects under development on the Jutland peninsula. The two projects will produce green hydrogen for the transport sector from renewable sources. Denmark’s largest energy company, Ørsted, has also announced plans for an ambitious 2 MW electrolysis plant with appurtenant hydrogen storage.
