EMISSIONS: Volvo Cars ready to sell CO2 credits to rivals as hybrid sales soar

Volvo Cars has sold so many hybrid models in Europe that the Swedish carmaker is open to selling environmental credits to rivals that are struggling to meet new emissions rules. As the group announced its first €500m “green bond” to fund electric car development, Volvo said almost one in three of its cars sold across Europe this year had been a hybrid, as well as a smaller number of pure battery cars under its Volvo and Polestar brands. Carmakers with sales in Europe have to reduce their average CO2 emissions to 95g/CO2 per km this year, or face large fines.

AUTO SALES: New car registrations drop -4.4% in weakest ever ‘new plate’ September - UK

The UK new car market declined -4.4% in September, according to figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The sector recorded 328,041 new registrations in the month – the weakest September since the introduction of the dual number plate system in 1999 and some -15.8% lower thanthe 10-year average of around 390,000 units for the month.

HYDROGEN: Milestone for green hydrogen: Heraeus launches new electrocatalyst

Heraeus today announced the launch of a cost-effective and efficient catalyst for PEM electrolysis. The new Heraeus catalyst contains 50 to 90 percent less iridium than conventional products with up to three times higher catalyst performance. The lower precious metal content of the Heraeus product reduces costs by up to 43 percent. The cost savings make green hydrogen affordable – an important step for the successful conversion to sustainable energy sources.
