AUTO PRODUCTION: Chinese NEV market

China’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market thrived in 2018, supported by the subsidies already in place, coupled with the advent of the new dual-credit system. We estimate that total output and sales exceeded 1.05 million units and 1.08 million units, respectively, last year. These figures – which encompass battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and extended range electric vehicles (EREVs) – equate to robust year-on-year (YoY) growth of 84% (production) and 88% (sales).

The US has become the second largest electric passenger car market in the world [1], selling 361,000 EVs in 2018 (a 2.1% market share) and relegating Europe to the third place with 302,000 cars (or a 2.0% market share), new analysis by Transport & Environment (T&E) shows. China continues to top the ranking with over one million EVs sold last year and an EV market share of 4%.

EMISSIONS: JATO: European new car CO2 emissions highest average since 2014; shift from diesel to gasoline and SUVs rise

An analysis by JATO Dynamics has found that average new vehicle CO2 emissions in European increased in 2018, with the total average increasing by 2.4 g/km to 120.5 g/km in 2018—the highest average of the last four years. The analysis covered 23 markets in Europe and found a direct correlation between diesel car registrations and average CO2 emissions.
