Morocco
Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition
The Energy Transition in Morocco
Morocco plays an increasingly strategic role in the global critical minerals landscape and the energy transition, shaped by its geological endowment, industrial capacity, and geopolitical positioning. The country holds some of the world’s largest phosphate reserves, vital for fertiliser production and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery technologies. It is a significant producer of cobalt, fluorspar, barite and manganese. These minerals are essential inputs across electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, semiconductors, and defence industries. Situated at the nexus of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, Morocco is well-placed to supply diversified markets while strengthening its industrial partnerships with the European Union, China, and the United States. The government’s long-term strategy combines mining sector development with ambitious renewable energy targets, including large-scale solar, wind and green hydrogen projects. These efforts reflect a deliberate policy to position Morocco not only as a supplier of raw materials but as an integrated player in emerging clean technology value chains. As global competition over critical mineral access deepens, Morocco’s resource base and infrastructure place it firmly within the evolving geopolitics of energy security and decarbonisation.
