Anguilla
Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition
The Energy Transition in Anguilla
Anguilla’s energy transition remains shaped by its heavy reliance on imported petroleum for power generation, exposing the island to price volatility and supply risks. The government has prioritised renewable energy development, particularly solar PV, as outlined in the Anguilla National Energy Policy and the Sustainable Energy Action Plan. Progress includes small-scale solar installations and microgrid initiatives aimed at enhancing energy security and resilience against climate-related disruptions. Critical minerals exploration within Anguilla is currently absent, with full dependency on imports for materials essential to renewable technologies, including lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements. Investment in grid modernisation, storage solutions, and clean energy infrastructure remains limited but features in development plans supported by UK aid and regional frameworks such as the OECS Sustainable Energy Strategy. Anguilla’s maritime Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) offers theoretical potential for offshore renewables, though exploration for seabed minerals is not currently pursued. Key challenges include financing constraints, natural disaster risks, and regulatory capacity, while opportunities lie in regional partnerships, climate finance, and diversifying energy sources to align with global decarbonisation goals and strengthen long-term resilience. Anguilla’s path to a low-carbon future remains at an early stage but presents clear opportunities for renewable energy leadership within the Eastern Caribbean. Strengthening regulatory capacity, attracting climate finance, and leveraging regional partnerships will be key to enhancing energy resilience and supporting long-term sustainability.
