Grenada
Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition
The Energy Transition in Grenada
Grenada’s energy transition is shaped by its commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependence, enhancing energy security, and improving climate resilience. The nation’s energy mix remains dominated by imported diesel, but government strategies outlined in the National Energy Policy (2011) and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) prioritise renewable energy development, particularly solar PV, wind, and geothermal exploration. The state-owned Grenada Electricity Services Ltd (GRENLEC) leads electricity generation and distribution, with ongoing efforts to expand renewable capacity and improve grid flexibility. Investment in small-scale solar installations and emerging interest in battery storage reflect early progress, though utility-scale projects remain limited. There is currently no critical minerals exploration or production in Grenada, with full reliance on imports for key materials like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements essential for renewable technologies and storage systems. The island faces challenges such as hurricane exposure, limited land availability for large-scale energy infrastructure, and financing constraints. However, opportunities lie in distributed energy systems, regional partnerships through CARICOM and OECS, and access to international climate finance. Grenada’s focus on resilience, policy ambition, and renewable energy integration positions the country to strengthen energy independence and advance sustainable development goals.
