EUROCORPS

Critical minerals, policy, and the energy transition

Facilitating market development across Eurocorps

Established in 1992, Eurocorps is a multinational military corps formed by France and Germany, later joined by Belgium, Spain, and Luxembourg as full members. Headquartered in Strasbourg, France, its mission is to contribute to European security and defence, complementing NATO and EU military capabilities. Full membership allows its members to participate directly in decision-making processes within Eurocorps, strategically influencing its operations and future direction. Members benefit from regular joint training and exercises, which enhance interoperability and operational effectiveness. Eurocorps emerged in the post-Cold War era when European nations sought to strengthen military cooperation and integration. Establishing the Franco-German Brigade in 1989 was a pivotal step, providing a foundation for the creation of Eurocorps three years later. Eurocorps is a rapid reaction force that is deployable for EU, NATO, and UN missions. It emphasises interoperability and collective defence, adapting to contemporary security challenges like terrorism and cyber threats. The Eurocorps framework members include Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, and Poland, with associated members Austria, Greece, Italy, Romania, and Turkey. Their collective efforts bolster regional security and support economic development and energy transition objectives. Associate members provide personnel and resources, enhancing the group's military capabilities. In addition to its defence role, Eurocorps supports the stability necessary for secure supply chains, which is crucial for economic development. By maintaining regional security, Eurocorps helps ensure the uninterrupted flow of critical minerals and energy resources, thereby contributing to the broader goals of market development and the energy transition across Europe.
